The mysterious Japanese legend of the red thread of fate

Have you ever wondered how such a person could have crossed your path when you least expected it? Was it fate or was it luck or chance? For the oriental culture, the fact that two people meet has an explanation, and everything happens in a perfect and predestined way.

The story itself tells that between two or more people who are destined to have an affective bond there is a “red thread”, which comes with them from birth.

The thread exists independently of the moment in their lives when the people are going to meet and it cannot be broken in any case, although sometimes it can be more or less tense, but it is always a sign of the bond that exists between them.

The legend of the red thread

One of the legends about this red thread tells that an old man who lives on the moon goes out every night and looks among the souls those who are predestined to join on earth, and when he finds them he ties them with a red thread so that they do not get lost.

But the most popular legend, and the one that is recited in almost all Japanese homes to children and young people, is this: Long ago, an emperor learned that in one of the provinces of his kingdom there lived a very powerful witch who had the ability to see the red thread of destiny, and he had her brought before him.

When the witch arrived, the emperor ordered her to find the other end of the thread that was tied to her little finger and bring it to the one who would be his wife; the witch agreed to this request and began to follow and follow the thread.

This search led them to a market where a poor peasant girl with a baby in her arms offered her products. When he reached this peasant girl, he stopped in front of her and invited her to stand up. He made the young emperor approach her and said: “Here is the end of your thread”, but when he heard this, the emperor was furious, thinking that it was a mockery of the witch.

He pushed the peasant girl who was still carrying her little daughter in her arms and made her fall, causing the baby to get a big wound on her forehead. Then he ordered his guards to stop the witch and cut off her head.

Many years later, the time came when this emperor had to get married and his court recommended that it would be best if he married the daughter of a very powerful general.

The emperor accepted this decision and began all the preparations to wait for the one who would later be chosen as the wife of the great emperor. The day of the wedding arrived, but above all the time had come to see his wife’s face for the first time.

She entered the temple with a beautiful dress and a veil that completely covered her face. When the veil was lifted, she saw for the first time that this beautiful face had a very peculiar scar on its forehead. It was the scar that he himself had caused by rejecting his own destiny years before. A destiny that the witch had placed in front of him and that he decided to disbelieve.

The teaching of the legend of the red thread according to Japanese tradition has to do with understanding destiny and the preponderant role that love plays in this thread. It clearly shows how destined love is that, we cannot escape from the person who was born to love us.

The thread can never be broken

“An invisible red thread connects those who are destined to meet, regardless of time, place or circumstances. The red thread can be stretched, contracted or tangled, but never broken. The ancient Eastern legend tries to shed some light on the mystery of twin souls.

And this is not just about a couple. We can join many people in life: friends, family, colleagues or even those who, even if we do not get along, cross paths in our lives to teach us something.
